Job search post graduation-Tips for success

So you have finally graduated after years of exams, essays and study sessions; what's next....Your first job search may feel quite intensive and you may get a few rejections but it is important to remain positive and persistent during this time. This is the reality of life and here at Recruit-Drive we want you to be successful so we put together a few tips for your first job search.

Have a strong CV

Firstly, make sure your CV represents you strongly as this is your personal marketing tool. Be wary of using general statements that may apply to many and focus on those that are specific to you. Think about projects or activities that you have led or played a key role in and capture these, including your contribution and the outcome.

Do your homework

Whilst appreciating you may be applying for several positions, keep a track of these along with some information about the company and job role you applied for. Coming to an interview unprepared to articulate what the employer does is not going to impress and very unlikely to lead to you getting the job.

Be prepared with examples

Print off a copy of the job spec and write alongside it the skills and experience you have that could be transferable to the role. Most companies use competency-based interviewing techniques where they will ask you to provide an example to support a particular aspect they are looking for. Having your examples noted and fresh in your mind ahead of any interviews will help give you the edge with regards to your presentation. Remember to use the STAR (situation, time, action and result) approach.

Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask for information on the selection process to help you prepare. Clarifying the format of the interview and asking if there will be competency-based tests, technical assessments or role plays is perfectly acceptable and it shows you are fully engaged.

After the interview

After your interview, regardless of which stage, send a follow-up email to your interviewers thanking them for their time and reiterating your interest in the role. If you do not have email contacts for your interviewers, send this to the recruiter contact and ask them to pass it on for you.
